m@ke: an aspirational new programme launched in 2019/20 for our supported learners in LECBThe m@ke: programme embraces our college ethos of combining meaningful & purposeful learning with art, creativity and the development of social enterprise. Our students are provided with the perfect platform to ignite and unleash their true artistic and creative potential by building on existing knowledge and developing and acquiring new skills. During this creative process, our learners are guided and supported by our specialist art tutors to develop a wide range of new and raw-edge techniques. Unique, handcrafted products, using ethical, eco-friendly & sustainable materials are personally designed & created by each individual student within our onsite studio. Each artist brings their own individual style to each piece, making a personal contribution that holds real value and creates a sense of purpose. Individually designed products are promoted & sold within our onsite studio, shop & café: a welcoming, relaxed and calm learning environment and shared community space. This allows our learners to develop confidence, independence, social and workplace skills as they interact with our customers, who can view the wide range of products being actively designed and handcrafted in our onsite studio. Alongside this, transferable and lifelong independent living and employability skills and qualifications are acquired with another of our specialist tutors; including a day focussed on wellbeing to promote positive mental health. This provides a perfect blended pathway to the individual student’s wider hopes & aspirations. People with learning difficulties and disabilities are often marginalised in society. Here at m@ke: we seek to promote social acceptance and inclusion by celebrating our students as gifted individuals, recognising them as independent artists & artisans. This wholly encapsulates our college-wide vision & mission as we strive to change perceptions and the future lives of many. Typical learning days include the following enrichment subjects and OCN/Gateway qualifications, delivered by a team of subject specialist SEN tutors:

They help everybody, no matter what the difficulties are, they will help you in individual ways. At college I had help with reading and writing and that has been amazing and the tutors are brilliant and just that it's ok to be who you are. Whatever help you need, how different it might be to someone else, the tutors and TA's just support you. I think they must study us and work out what each one of us needs and then the TA's and the tutors give us exactly what we need. It's incredible really.
