Learn about the journey to become a therapeutic counsellor and the CPCAB qualifications. You will cover listening skills and how to interpret body language, as well as how to be non-judgmental and more self aware. It will also help you decide whether a career in counselling is for you.
A genuine, keen interest in this area. You may – or may not – have started training to be a Counsellor.
What you will learn
1. Your reasons for wishing to become a counsellor. 2. The components of counselling. 3. Anxieties of budding counsellors. 4. Who is in the room? 5. The Wounded Healer. 6. Levels of Engagement. 7. Risks and Challenges. 8. Transference. 9. Core features of different models.
How you will learn on this course
Teaching methods will include tutor explanations, group discussion, case vignettes and handouts. (No role plays).
How you will be assessed on this course
1. Clarify reasons for wishing to become a counsellor. 2. Identify the key components of counselling. 3. Increase awareness of the anxieties, risks and satisfactions of becoming a counsellor. 4. Recognise the different levels of ‘engagement’ in counselling. 5. Increase awareness of transference. 6. Describe (briefly) the core features of some counselling models/theories.

None, although a certificate of attendance is available upon request.

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor may ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. This paperwork is a requirement of the College’s Quality Improvement Programme.
