Course description

Trauma can result in a range of emotions. Learn about the challenges this presents to the counsellor in order to improve your skills and ability to respond.

Entry requirements

1. No specific guidance needed but the course is not meant to be explicitly therapeutic. 2. An enthusiastic, enquiring interest in this fascinating area.

What you will learn

Definitions of trauma, different types, major symptoms, assessment and teratment methods.

How you will learn on this course

Tutor presentation, group discussion, case studies and handouts. You may wish to take notes for reference.

How you will be assessed on this course

1. Define trauma. 2. Identify a range of symptoms of trauma. 3. Discuss the impact of trauma upon 'the life story'. 4. State some methods of assessing trauma. 5. Name some models that treat trauma. 6. Identify some factors that influence the response to trauma.

Qualification and exam information (only for courses leading to a qualification)

None, although a certificate of attendance may be available upon request.

What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time

There is no set work for this one day course, but students are encouraged to reflect on their experience and on the course content.

Additional information

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor may ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. This paperwork is a requirement of the College’s Quality Improvement Programme.
