Course description

 

Find out about criminal behaviour, the nature and measurement of offending, police and crime, offender profiling, and the prevention and punishment of crime.

 

Entry requirements

 

None except a keen interest in the subject.

 

What you will learn

 

The psychology of crime, policing and punishment of offenders. The course will look at explanations of criminal behaviour, the nature and measurement of offending, police and crime, offender profiling, and the punishing, treating and prevention of crime.

 

How you will learn on this course

 

Teaching methods will include tutor explanations, group work, the use of video and internet material where possible, handouts, and PowerPoint presentations.

If you wish notes in class can be taken.

 

How you will be assessed on this course

 

1. Identify public conceptions and misconceptions of crime.

2. Explain how psychological principles are applied to crime.

3. State ways of punishing and preventing crime.

4. Identify pitfalls in offender profiling.

5. Discuss different explanations of criminal behaviour.

 

Qualification and exam information (only for courses leading to a qualification)

 

None, although a certificate of attendance is available on request.

There is no set work.

Basic stationery.

Paper, pens or pencils, optional A4 binder for storing notes, handouts etc.
