Christmas Baking for Beginners

Course description

Learn how to create a range of tempting treats including a yule log, Christmas tree cookies and shortbread, luxury mince pies, savouries, Christmas chocolate cake and festive cupcakes. Basic cake decoration will also be taught to finish items.

Entry requirements

An interest in home baking using basic and quick methods.

What you will learn

1. Basic cake making techniques. 2. Making buttercream and glace icing. 3. Lining cake tins. 4. Choice of ingredients. 5. Tasting items (from the demonstration). 6. Following step by step recipes and adaptations. Each learner will be given a set of recipes to use in class and they will be sent all the recipes electronically at the end of the course.

How you will learn on this course

1. Demonstrations - whole class and one to one. 2. Discussions . 3. Explanations . 4. Students practical (at least 80% of the lesson).

How you will be assessed on this course

1. Make a range of baked items associated with Christmas using basic recipes and techniques. 2. Decorate baked items . 3. Line cake tins of various shapes. 4. Select ingredients for baked items. 5. Follow and adapt basic recipes.

What you need to bring to the first class

A pen. A list of ingredients will be sent out 10 days before the start of the course. Small amounts of ingredients, baking paper etc. are provided. Students will also need to bring an apron, tea towel and suitable containers to take their baking home in. The baking freezes well.

Additional information

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
