Pilates aims to strengthen the body in a balanced way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing.
You will need to be in reasonable health – if you have a health issue, in the first instance you should contact your GP or health professional. If you need to discuss any health issues you should contact the Tutor through the centre where the course is running.
What you will learn
• This course is designed as a mixed ability class, in other words some Pilates movements practised within this particular course have different levels of progression so whether you are a beginner or you have done Pilates before there is a level to suit you. • Each class will consist of a warm up followed by mat-based exercises that will help you to become more body aware, improve your posture and to strengthen the body. • Students will learn about the principles of Pilates, core muscles, the spine and how Pilates can help them in everyday life.
How you will learn on this course
Learners will be encouraged to work to their own ability based on their health, posture and body type. The tutor will explain the principles of Pilates and their will be class discussions. Exercises will be demonstrated initially and then learners will have a go. The tutor will observe that learners are carrying out exercises correctly. Learners will only be encouraged to move on to the next level when they have achieved control in the lower level.
How you will be assessed on this course
There will be interactive teaching and learning activities shared with students by the tutor including demonstrations, use of technology, Word Clouds, quizzes, reflective diaries, observation, discussions, direct questioning, self-assessment, working in pairs or groups, working together to develop and challenge what you have learnt, finding out what you can do well and what you could do to improve.

What you need to bring to the first class
Note book and pen. Bottled water, towel. Mats are provided but you can bring your own if preferred. Wear loose clothing, nothing restrictive around the waist. Loose clothing in layers. A top to put on during relaxation.

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor may ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. This paperwork is a requirement of the College’s Quality Improvement Programme.
