Knitting has seen a recent increase in popularity throughout the nation. Learn the basics of knitting or a refresher your skills. You will learn how to cast on, do basic purl and plain stitches, cast off, join pieces and read patterns.
Suitable for those who have little or no experience of knitting. It is important to note that, as with all craft courses, you will require a degree of manual dexterity.
What you will learn
This course is for those who have little or no experience of knitting or following a pattern and who wish to learn and develop basic knitting skills and techniques.
You will learn all the basics of knitting, including casting on and off, knit and purl stitches, and how to follow a pattern.
How you will learn on this course
You will learn the basic stitches, as well as how to cast on and cast off. You will participate in a number of individual and group projects, each designed to help you to develop your knitting skills and make a number of small items such as a hat or wrist warmers.
Techniques will be demonstrated by the tutor, and presentations and assessments will be important teaching and learning activities for this course and for your personal development.
How you will be assessed on this course
1. Know how to cast on.
2. Know how to cast off.
3. Knit to a specified tension.
4. Read a simple knitting pattern.
5. Demonstrate how to use the appropriate size needles.
6. Make a small item by joining knitted pieces.
Qualification and exam information (only for courses leading to a qualification)
What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time
Work outside the classroom is not compulsory but as it will help your progress to practice techniques learned during the course, homework assignments will be set.
What you need for your course
• a pair of knitting needles, size 4mm.
• a ball of double knitting yarn.
What you need to bring to the first class
Before buying any of the items listed below, you may wish to wait until the first lesson, so that the tutor can advise you what you will need. If, however, you wish to purchase your materials in advance, there are a number of online stores offering good value; these are listed below.
• small scissors
• tape measure
• small ruler
• a few safety pins
• knitting needles, various sizes (3mm, 3.25mm, 3.75mm, 4mm, 4.5mm)
• an assortment of knitting yarn
• blunt tapestry needle
• small notebook and pen or pencil
• A4 file

All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency.
