Course description

Discover the fundamental elements of crochet, learn basic crochet stitches and techniques and how to understand a pattern. Designed for those who know nothing about crochet but will also benefit students who are looking to refresh and expand their knowledge.

Entry requirements

Suitable for those who have little or no experience of crochet. It is important to note, however, that, as with all craft courses, you will require a degree of manual dexterity.

What you will learn

This course is for those who have little or no experience of crocheting or following a pattern and who wish to learn and develop basic crochet skills and techniques. You will learn all the basics of crochet, including choosing hooks and yarn, making a foundation chain, slipstitch, double crochet, half treble, treble, joining pieces, and how to follow a pattern.

How you will learn on this course

You will learn the basic stitches, as well as how to finish your work neatly and work to a specified tension. You will participate in a number of individual and group projects, each designed to help you to develop your crochet skills and make a number of small items, including a granny square. Techniques will be demonstrated by the tutor, and presentations and assessments will be important teaching and learning activities for this course and for your personal development.

How you will be assessed on this course

1. Demonstrate knowledge of how to hold the hook and yarn. 2. Make a foundation chain. 3. Work to a specified tension. 4. Read a simple crochet pattern. 5. Demonstrate basic crochet stitches. 6. Make a small item by joining crocheted pieces.

What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time

Work outside the classroom is not compulsory but as it will help your progress to practice techniques learned during the course, homework assignments will be set.

What you need for your course

For the first lesson, you will need the following: • crochet hooks, sizes 3.5mm and 4mm. • a ball of cotton yarn, double knitting weight.

What you need to bring to the first class

Additional information

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
