A craft course on Silversmithing and Jewellery suitable for all levels, beginners and on-going students. You'll learn the basic metalworking techniques necessary to produce jewellery pieces with precision and accuracy.
No particular requirements except for an interest in making items in metal using your own hands. On-going students are welcome to extend and continue major projects.
What you will learn
A craft course on Silversmithing and Jewellery suitable for all levels, beginners and on-going students.
This course will enable you to learn the basic metalworking techniques necessary to produce simple pieces with precision and accuracy. We will work on a variety of projects which encompass a range of different techniques and which will give stu-dents the opportunity to develop skills that can be transferred to the full range of Silversmithing and Jewellery design and making.
Students are also encouraged to work on their own projects if desired
How you will learn on this course
We will start with prototypes using copper and brass to enable students to gain con-fidence and develop their own designs at the outset before progressing to finished pieces created in semi-precious metals.
Practical demonstrations and discussion will be given where necessary.
How you will be assessed on this course
By the end of the course students should have finished: -
1) a bracelet.
2) a single stone ring.
3) earrings set with stones.
4) a brooch.
Students should also be able to show improvement and greater confidence in using the metalworking techniques of: -
It is anticipated that students will spend approximately 7 weeks on each project but this will depend on the individual ability and speed of each student. This will in-clude the various stages of the techniques listed above
Returning students will have the chance to develop their own designs and build upon techniques already learnt.
Qualification and exam information (only for courses leading to a qualification)
What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time
Not required but students are welcome to practice techniques at home if they wish.
What you need for your course
Sketchbook, pen/pencil, rag, own tools if available and a protective overall or apron. Saw blades can be purchased from the tutor.
Students will need to purchase their own hand tools and the tutor will advise what they will need to buy to enable them to fully participate in the course.
What you need to bring to the first class
As above however after 2-3 months many students buy a few basic tools/books of their own. The course tutor will be able to give further advice as the course pro-gresses. Students will need to purchase basic consumable items such as saw blades and drill bits as and when needed. Semi-precious and precious gemstones and metal will also need to be purchased.

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals.
All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency.
All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
