Course description

Create beautiful unique copper and silver Christmas decorations to spice up your Christmas trees. You will learn how to cut out shapes and fold form metal to create interesting shapes and designs to make 2D and 3D tree or wall hangings.

What you will learn

Learners will experiment making various samples while using a wide range of metal manipulation techniques. Learners will then go on to make finished pieces inspired by samples and drawn designs. Process, technique, and design are emphasized in this class, instead of being project-oriented. We’ll work primarily in copper to learn, but learners may also choose to use fine silver, Argentium Silver, or traditional sterling.

How you will learn on this course

Demonstrations will be provided alongside step-by-step hands-outs. Question and answer with group and one-to-one instruction. Samples of work will be on display.

How you will be assessed on this course

1. Be able to identify the tools needed to manipulate metal. 2. Be able to construct different types of samples with techniques demonstrated. 3. Be able to make a selection of Christmas decorations from sample inspiration.

What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time

No homework is required outside of the lesson, but it is encouraged to practice at home to improve on skills learnt, during class.

What you need for your course

A list of books will be supplied at the first lesson and a list of suppliers.

What you need to bring to the first class

Notepad and pen/pencil, to record technical notes taken in class, an A4 folder to file hand-outs received each week. You will be able to borrow a set of pliers, but you will be encouraged to purchase your own for further development. PLEASE NOTE STUDENTS WILL BE CHARGED FOR MATERIALS USED, but will be advised where to obtain materials should they wish to purchase their own. Cost of materials initially is modest (£1.50 - £3 depending on the project).

Develop learning and skills by doing your own research and by using information acquired from the course. You can further your study in this subject by enrolling on further metal courses in the college.

Additional information

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
