Course description

Learn how to make your own clothes using the sewing machine and choose patterns and fabric. Suitable for complete beginners or those who are looking to refresh their clothes making skills.

What you will learn

Use of sewing machine and over locker. How to fit a garmet successfully. Choosing and using commercial patterns. Measurement taking and choosing fabric. Laying-out and marking-up pattern on the fabric. Reading pattern instructions, fitting garmets, seam finishing and hand stiching. Making up techniques such as zips, waistbands, buttonholes, facings, collars, sleeces, hem finishes, pockets. Soft tailoring and lingerie.

How you will learn on this course

One to one teaching and group teaching and demonstrations.

How you will be assessed on this course

1. Students with more experience will be able to make garmets which have greater detail. 2. Make simple size alterations to patterns and cut out out fabric. 3. Able to choose pattern and suitable fabric. 4. Read pattern instructions with confidence and make up the garments. 5. Thread the sewing machine and overlocker with confidence.

Homework guidance will be given if student requires. No compulsory homework.

Additional information

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
