Course description

Do you have a sewing machine but are not sure how to use it? Learn how to select the correct tension, practise stitch lengths and widths, blind hem, sew buttonholes and zips. Bring your own machine or use one of ours.

Entry requirements

A basic knowledge and ability in using the sewing machine would be an advantage to get the most from this course.

What you will learn

Do you have a sewing machine and are not sure how to use it properly? Learn how to select the correct tension, practise stitch lengths and widths, blind and fine hemming, buttonholes, and joining fabric. Bring in your own machine or use one of ours. An essential course for beginners and experienced sewers alike. You will become more confident and learn what your machine has to offer. Miniature machines are not suitable. All electrical equipment used within the Learning Centre is regularly tested for safety. Learners who bring their own sewing machines into the Learning Centre do so at their own risk. Students will be able to familiarise themselves with their sewing machine and learn how to check the stitch tension and how to correct it. A sample chart of stitch lengths and widths will be made also samples of kind hemming, buttonhole, attaching elastic, lace and a fine hem on lingerie, zip insertion and piping. Students will be shown how to identify machine parts. There will be discussion about fabric types and machine needles.

How you will learn on this course

There will be a short lecture and demonstration by the tutor with discussion on all aspects of machining. The students will work on their personal machine with constant tutor input. Group discussion and feedback is encouraged. Starting with basic principles of the sewing machine, knowledge will be built on by repetition of processes on machine samples.

How you will be assessed on this course

1. Identify stitch tension problems and correction recall info. 2. Identify the right type of stitches to use in garment – soft furnishing construction. 3. The learners will be able to make a simple garment or soft furnishing project. 4. Identify the type of thread and needles to use..

What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time

Some practice with the sewing machine – samples at home will help improve the skills.

What you need for your course

It may be necessary to buy one or two new feet for the machine to get better use of it.

What you need to bring to the first class

1. Sewing machine, instruction book and any machine feet bought with the machine. 2. Sewing thread, same brand, 2 colours. 3. Scissors. 4. Pins, needles, tape measure and notebook. All electrical equipment used within the Learning Centre is regularly tested for safety. Learners who bring their own sewing machines into the Learning Centre do so at their own risk.

Additional information

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
