Course description

Would you like to make clothes but are baffled by commercial patterns? This taster will help you understand how to read the envelope and use your measurements, what lines to cut, how to decipher symbols and terminology, how to and lay on fabric and even make minor adjustments. Develop the confidence to move on to one of our clothesmaking courses.

Entry requirements

An interest in clothesmaking! Bring a tape measure and a pen.

What you will learn

How to read a variety of commercial pattern envelopes and select the most appropriate. How to take and apply accurate body measurements The meaning and use of pattern symbols. Fabrics and notions. Relevant technical terminology. Laying patterns ready for cutting fabric.

How you will learn on this course

Students will have the opportunity to observe and listen to demonstrations about patterns, supported by clear hand-outs and PowerPoint presentations. The tutor will offer one to one tuition or small group demonstration. Students will have the chance to view hand-outs and additional sewing information on the college website specific to sewing and clothes making.

How you will be assessed on this course

1. Select an appropriate commercial pattern. 2. Identify correct sizing. 3. Understand and apply pattern symbols. 4. Lay paper patterns on fabric ready to cut.

Additional information

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
