Course description

Do you want to learn how to use a sewing machine or have one and don’t know where to start? In this 2 week taster, learn the basics and how to sew a straight line. Then you can sew the simplest, origami tote bag and impress your friends!

Entry requirements

An interest in sewing!

What you will learn

Machine dials and settings. How to thread machine and wind a bobbin. How to sew a straight line. How to use a simple card template and cut fabric. How to construct a simple tote bag. Advice and guidance for buying your own machine (if required).

How you will learn on this course

Students will have the opportunity to observe and listen to demonstrations about patterns, supported by clear hand-outs and PowerPoint presentations. The tutor will offer one to one tuition or small group demonstration. Students will have the chance to view hand-outs and additional sewing information on the college website specific to sewing and clothes making.

How you will be assessed on this course

Correctly set up and thread a sewing machine. Sew a straight seam. Cut and sew a simple tote bag.

Qualification and exam information (only for courses leading to a qualification)

Not applicable.

What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time

None but students can practise sewing on their machine at home.

What you need for your course

Students will need to supply their own fabric and thread for the bag. 2 pieces 150cm x 50cm curtain weight fabric. (Search charity shops and boot fairs for curtains and fabric remnants).

What you need to bring to the first class

Pen, thread, pins, scissors, fabric scraps/small pieces for practise.

Additional information

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
