Course description

Save yourself a trip to the dry cleaners and learn to take up a hem and make small repairs and alterations to you clothes.

Entry requirements

Basic sewing skills and know how to use sewing machine.

What you will learn

How to take up hems on trousers, jeans and skirts. How to take in or let out a waist. How to replace a zip. Ideas and methods for minor repairs.

How you will learn on this course

Students will have the opportunity to observe and listen to demonstrations, supported by clear hand-outs and PowerPoint presentations. The tutor will offer one to one tuition or small group demonstration. Students will have the chance to view hand-outs and additional sewing information on the college website specific to sewing and clothes making.

How you will be assessed on this course

1. Measure and cut new hem lengths. 2. Sew a blind hem by hand and machine 3. Shorten a pair of jeans. 4. Replace a zip. 5. Reduce and increase a waist measurement. 6. A minor repair.

Qualification and exam information (only for courses leading to a qualification)

Not applicable.

What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time

None but students can practise sewing on their machine at home.

What you need for your course

Students will need to bring their own garments to alter and purchase zips, threads and trims if required.

What you need to bring to the first class

Pen, thread, pins, scissors, tailors chalk, your garments to be altered.

Additional information

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
