Course description

Designed for the complete beginner to digital SLR photography. You will learn how to use the controls and functions of your camera and edit your images in Photoshop. By the end of this course you will have a portfolio of images and written evidence that demonstrate your skills. A digital SLR camera is essential.

Entry requirements

a) guidance needed: You will need to be assessed for this course as the entry requirements are that you have basic literacy and computer skills B) entry requirements: A digital SLR type camera is essential for this course. A number of accessories, such as a tripod, for example are desirable. For the image editing using Photoshop, it is important that the learner has basic computer skills - keyboard and mouse familiarity, opening and closing digital files, saving to a storage device such as a memory stick. * Initial Assessments * Before enrolling you are required to complete an assessment in Maths and English at the college. This will help us ensure that the course is suitable for you and that you have the right English and Maths skills to enjoy the course and succeed. What you will learn

After completing this course learners will gain the NCFE level 1 Award in Photography. This course is designed for complete beginners to photography, therefore does not require any previous knowledge or skills. Successful completion of this course is dependent upon the production of a portfolio of evidence consisting of written documentation and photo images that demonstrate that the learner have understood each component of the course. The course consists of two units of work. The first unit examines the digital SLR camera in detail. Each component, including menu options and buttons are examined in detail followed by a series of practical tasks. The second unit examines image editing techniques using Photoshop to enhance and improve images. This accredited course will cover all the functions of a modern digital SLR camera. A range of camera accessories will be examined and explored through practical exercises. Image editing software will be used to enhance and improve images. Each photographic genera (Landscape, Portraiture etc.) will be studied and put into practice. Each learner will produce a journal consisting of written and photographic evidence from their studies. How you will learn on this course

You will be taught through the completion of assignments, critical review of images, discussion of photographic techniques and practical exercises exploring the use of photographic equipment. You will complete a final visual project and written evaluation of your working methods, which will be assessed to NCFE level 1 standards both internally and externally. There is no formal examination associated with this course.

How you will be assessed on this course

Unit 1 Use the camera and accessories to create images 1.1. Identify the use of camera controls 1.2 . Identify a range of recording media used in either film cameras or digital cameras 1.3. Select appropriate lenses and camera positions for a range of subjects 1.4. Demonstrate the use of equipment and accessories 1.5 . Outline basic visual language and composition 1.6. Produce a range of exploratory photographs 1.7. Follow Health & Safety procedures Unit 2 Understand and apply image production skills 1.1. Demonstrate downloading an image from digital camera 1.2. Select suitable images for printing/presentation 1.3. Demonstrate processing procedures needed to produce prints/images

Qualification and exam information (only for courses leading to a qualification)

NCFE Level 1 Award in Photography There is no formal exam associated with this course. Assessment is through a portfolio of written and photographic evidence.

What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time

You will be taught through the use of additional homework and assignments. You will create final visual project and evaluation for assessment. You will complete a workbook and keep up-to-date notes of your projects and course progress. Nearly all written evidence and construction of portfolio will be completed in learners' own time. Expect to spend as many hours outside lesson time as in.

What you need for your course

Do not purchase any materials until after the first lesson where advice will be provided on all the necessary materials. However, expect to obtain: • 1 x A4 D ring binder to hold written evidence • 1 x A4 binder to hold hand outs and hand written notes • A flash memory stick to store computer generated work • Access to a computer outside of class time to complete assignments for written evidence.

Additional information

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency, who expect that learners who enrol on a course leading to a qualification will take that qualification at the College. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
