A popular Latin-American couple’s dance, developing the Cuban style, differentiated from other styles because of its West African dance heritage. Practice steps in line, couple routines and take part in the group dance called La Rueda. No need for a partner, this is a fun way of keeping fit and socialising at the same time.
guidance needed: it is not advisable to join the class if you have hip, spine or back problems since there are a lot of Afro movements and Cuban motion is used throughout. Please consult with your GP. entry requirements: : you will need to have completed the improvers course or have knowledge of a variety of Salsa steps and couple routines. Be prepared to practice and listen to music at home.
What you will learn
The Advanced course will cover a warm up session, Salsa steps in line, Salsa couple routines and La Rueda de Casino (choreographed Cuban salsa dance). The warm up will consist of various Afro-Latin American movements (salsa, son, rumba, mambo) in order to develop co-ordination, flexibility and posture which are what really make all these dances swing. Students will learn advanced steps in line and couple combinations. They will improve leading and following skills and the fluency of the dance in couples and in La Rueda. They will learn to dance to faster salsa tracks and will be able to identify when to dance as soloist in the couple dance.
How you will learn on this course
The class will always start with a warm up, followed by work in line to introduce new steps or revise them before practising in couples. Learners will then be taught new couple combinations which will then be revised in La Rueda (the choreographed circle dance). There will be time for free dance in couples to improve fluency, leading and following skills. The teaching methods will include demonstration, practice, change of partners, questions and answers, handouts, observation and correction. Routines available on the College intranet for revision.
How you will be assessed on this course
There will be interactive teaching and learning activities shared with students by the tutor including demonstrations, use of technology, Word Clouds, quizzes, reflective diaries, observation, discussions, direct questioning, self-assessment, working in pairs or groups, working together to develop and challenge what you have learnt, finding out what you can do well and what you could do to improve.
Qualification and exam information (only for courses leading to a qualification)
What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time
Although it’s not compulsory to practice at home, it will be beneficial as one class a week is not enough to build up confidence in dancing salsa. Also students should buy salsa music and listen to it at home to familiarise themselves with it.
What you need for your course
Buy or streamline Salsa music to listen at home and practice.
What you need to bring to the first class
Students should wear comfortable clothes, nothing baggy since the tutor needs to see movements. It is essential to wear shoes that don’t stick to the floor. Bring water, but do not eat anything heavy for at least two hours before the class. In case of any injury or pain, please let the tutor know.
What you can do next
(Further study in related subjects.) Access to Salsa workshops throughout the country and abroad and to Salsa Clubs. Continue on the salsa advanced course to maintain knowledge of dance and learn further routines.
At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor may ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. This paperwork is a requirement of the College’s Quality Improvement Programme.
