An introduction to the Portuguese language. Learn the essentials of communication and understand the language and culture. The course covers essentials such as greetings, getting around, and eating out. The course will help to develop listening skills while beginning to develop writing skills. CL
No previous knowledge of the language is required.
What you will learn
A. GREETINGS/LOCATIONS/OTHER USEFUL WORDS (Name, nationality, yourself, family, how long, how old, changing money, time, countries/nationalities, days of week, months, apologies, excuse me, how much, do you have, I’d like, I don’t understand). B. GETTING AROUND (Asking the way, hiring a car or bike, using the underground, getting information, buying tickets, taking a taxi). C. SOMEWHERE TO STAY (Finding a place, checking in & out, asking about your room, services, asking for help, campsites, self-catering & Hostels). D. CAFÉ LIFE/EATING OUT (Ordering, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, hot drinks, typical snacks, finding somewhere to eat, asking about the menu). E. ENTERTAINMENT (Finding what’s on, what to see, cinema, fairs, music concerts, sports, children’s entertainment). F. EMERGENCIES (General phrases – SOS, health, parts of the body, theft or loss, valuables).
How you will learn on this course
Speaking activities such as role-play, flashcards and conversation games. Also, PowerPoint presentations, games and pair work.
How you will be assessed on this course
To be able to understand and compose basic phrases which will allow for independent and confident communication and therefore the ability to operate with ease in a Portuguese speaking country will be achieved.

Pupils are expected to do the homework requested by teacher and 2 hours study each week.

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
