Course description

Get to grips with basic communication in German, including essential vocabulary, greetings, personal information and directions. Ideal for beginners or those with a little knowledge of German.

No prior knowledge is necessary.

What you will learn

Everyday topics which are suitable for beginners. Students will develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as learn vocabulary so that they can begin to deal with a variety of situations encountered while in Germany or when meeting a German speaker. Topics will include: Numbers, greetings, personal information, directions, food, telling the time, days of the week, months, public transport, asking for help, talking about the past and the future, expressing likes and dislikes, family, asking questions, hobbies, going to the doctor and many more.

How you will learn on this course

The course employs interactive teaching and learning methods such as partner work, using multi-media resources, role-play, listening activities, grammar workshops, language games, practice activities.

How you will be assessed on this course

1. Greet people. 2. Give information about yourself. 3. Say how you are. 4. Ask how others are. 5. Ask for help. 6. Ask for directions. 7. Follow basic directions. 8. Recognise how to pronounce German words. 9. Know the German alphabet. 10. Spell words and phrases. 11. Recognise numbers to 100. 12. Use numbers to 100. 13. Order food and drink in a restaurant . 14. Talk about your likes and dislikes. 15. Talk about your hobbies and interests. 16. Recognise a limited number of German phrases. 17. Form the present perfect tense. 18. Form the future tense. 19. Know some German word endings. 20. Make an appointment with a doctor. 21. Know the days of the week. 22. Know the months of the year. 23. Know colours. 24. Know frequently used adjectives. 25. Talk about family members.

Additional information

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
