A lively interactive course where you will learn some basis signs, including fingerspelling, greeting and deaf awareness. Improve your signing skills and confidence in simple, everyday sign language use. Introductory course for the BSL Level 2 Award. CL
Award in British Sign Language Level 1. You will be asked to show the original copy of your certificate. If you have completed the Level 1 course and awaiting the outcome of results please speak with the tutor. This course is for students who wish to proceed onto the next stage following the Level 1 Certificate in BSL and want to improve their communication skills for social or professional reasons. Students must complete this course and be approved by tutor interview/assessment before enrolling on BSL Level 2.
What you will learn
This course will give students greater confidence and improve existing communication skills in British Sign Language. This will be done through exercises resembling some real life experiences of people who meet and mix with Deaf people in their family, social or working lives. The course gives students a greater appreciation of Deafness.

Revision from Level 1: 1. Use numbers - how long, how much, age what? 2. Talk about transport. 3. Give and follow directions. 4. Describing home, people, animals and objects. 5. Discuss interests, hobbies and activities. 6. Refreshments, food and drink at home, work and College. Introductions and asking for and giving information about one’s self: 1. Name what? 2. Work what? 3. Live where? 4. Work where? 5. School/College where? 6. Leave job why? 7. College how long? 8. Tea/Coffee – like? 9. Want break now? 10. Like here? Finger spelling receptive and productive skills: 1. Use the appropriate finger spelling patterns to match the lip pattern by not mouthing the individual letters Use negation/affirmation-NO/YES: 1. I don’t understand/yes, I understand? 2. I don’t like/Yes like! 3. I don’t want/Want! 4. I can’t/Yes I can! 5. None, nothing, never. Use facial expression (Non Manual Features): 1. Show feeling/emotion- sadness, boredom, anger, happiness, being fed up etc. 2. Show size, distance, quantities – few, lots. Practice in real life situations: 1. Participate in everyday conversation. 2. Demonstrate good use of sign language principles. 3. Provide information about past and present - time lines. 4. Will cover some of Theme 1 of Level 2 – every day conversations.
Qualification and exam information (only for courses leading to a qualification)
None. Preparation towards the Certificate in British Sign Language Level 2.
What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time
Students will be encouraged to practise signing skills, watching TV programs and DVDs with sign language or visiting Deaf clubs if possible.

Ring Binder, paper and pen. Handouts will be given.

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
