Communicate with deaf people on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. Gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of BSL. Fees include exam costs of £115.
a) Guidance needed: All students must attend the first session of this class, which will be a guidance session. At this session the tutor will discuss the course with you to ensure that it is the right course for you. b) Entry requirements: Completion of the Pre-Level 1 course or equivalent. Motivation and interest in Deaf issues, a Deaf family member or friend, or needing the skills for work.

How you will learn on this course
The course will follow the Signature syllabus – introductions, work in pairs/groups, role play/games, handouts covering everyday situations and real life experiences. Regular Formative and summative assessments using video recording with feed back to aid self assessments throughout the course.
How you will be assessed on this course
1. Introduce self. 2. Fingerspell at the correct pace and read back. 3. Maintain a short, simple conversation on a range of topics with a deaf person. 4. Demonstrate suitable facial expressions to go with the signs. 5. Show correct sign order, pace and flow. 6. Have an awareness of the Deaf community and Culture. 7. Recognise regional variations in BSL.
Qualification and exam information (only for courses leading to a qualification)
Signature Level 1 Award in BSL. Assessment is in 3 parts unit 101, 102 & 103. You must pass all units to gain the level 1 Award.
What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time
Up to one hour per week to help practise skills of BSL.

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency, who expect that learners who enrol on a course leading to a qualification will take that qualification at the College. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
