1 - Course description 

This course covers a wide variety of topics including number, measure and data handling. It will help to boost your confidence in maths, helping you to apply maths skills to problem solving required for everyday life. You could also go onto further study.

 

2 - Entry requirements

Before enrolling you are required to complete an assessment in Maths and English at the college. This will help us ensure that the course is suitable for you and that you have the right English and Maths skills to enjoy the course and succeed.

3 - What you will learn 

You will be taught how to perform calcuations; estimate and measure with metric; read, interpret and use data; apply maths skills to problem solving tasks and everyday situations.

 

4 - How you will learn on this course 

Group work, discussion and individual practice will be used. The tutor can recommend websites/games for extra support.

 

5 - How you will be assessed on this course 

1.Read, write and order numbers up to 1000.  2.Add using three-digit numbers.  3.Subtract using  three-digit numbers.  4.Multiply by single digits .  5.Divide by single digits .  6.Round to nearest 10 and 100 .  7.Use a calculator to check work.  8.Recognise and use simple fractions. 9.Add and subtract money. 10.Round decimals to two decimal places and use in practical contexts.

11.Read and record time. 12.Estimate in metric. 13.Measure and compare length, weight and capacity. 14.Describe standard and non-standard units. 15.Estimate, measure and compare temperature. 16.Complete simple calculations involving measures.

17.Read temperature. 18.Recognise 2D and 3D shapes and use for problem solving. 19.Use metric units in everyday situations. 20.Read and interpret data from lists, tables, graphs and charts.

21.Collect data and display in graphs and charts.

 

6 - Qualification and exam information (only for courses leading to a qualification) 

City & Guilds Functional skills at Entry level 3 will be completed during the class.

No fee.

 

7 - What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time 

Learners will need to complete homework on a weekly basis of up to half an hour.

 

8 - What you need for your course 

None, but you can bring a calculator if you have one.

 

What you need to bring to the first class 

1.Notepad. 2.Pen.  3.Pencil.  4.Ruler. 5.Rubber.

 

10 - What you can do next 

You may be able to progress to Level one, your tutor will discuss this with you at the end of the course.

 

Additional Information 

Paperwork to help your learning 

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course.  Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals.

 

All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency, who expect that learners who enrol on a course leading to a qualification will take that qualification at the College.

 All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
