This course covers a wide variety of topics including number, measure and data handling. It will help to boost your confidence in maths, helping you to apply maths skills to problem solving required for everyday life. You could also go onto further study.

Before enrolling you are required to complete an assessment in Maths and English at the college. This will help us ensure that the course is suitable for you and that you have the right English and Maths skills to enjoy the course and succeed.

3 - What you will learn
You will be taught how to perform calcuations; estimate and measure with metric; read, interpret and use data; apply maths skills to problem solving tasks and everyday situations.

Group work, discussion and individual practice will be used. The tutor can recommend websites/games for extra support.
5 - How you will be assessed on this course
1.Read, order and compare numbers including large numbers. 2.Add, subtract, multiply and divide using efficient written methods. 3.Work out simple ratio and direct proportion . 4.Read, write, order and compare common fractions and mixed numbers . 5.Find parts of whole number quantities or measurements . 6.Read, write, order and compare decimals up to 3 decimal places.7.Add and subtract decimals up to 2 decimal places. 8.Find simple percentage parts of quantities and measurements. 9.Find simple percentage increase and decrease. 10.Recognise equivalencies between common fractions, decimals and percentages . 11.Read, estimate, measure and compare weight. 12.Read, estimate, measure and compare capacity. 13.Read, estimate, measure and compare length . 14.Convert units of weight, capacity and length in the metric system.15.Work out the perimeter of simple shapes. 16.Work out the area of rectangles. 17.Work out simple volume . 18.Extract and interpret information from tables, diagrams, charts and line graphs . 19.Find the arithmetical average (mean) for a set of data. 20.Find the range for a set of data.
6 - Qualification and exam information (only for courses leading to a qualification)
This course is linked to a City & Guilds Level 1 Functional skills qualification. Exam dates will be advised by your tutor at the start of the course.
No fee (but there will be a charge if you need to resit the exam).
7 - What you will be expected to do outside your lesson time
Learners will need to complete homework on a weekly basis of around 1 hour. This is essential if learners want to be successful.
8 - What you need for your course
A calculator and geometry set are essential for the course and the exam but learners are advised not to buy items until they have spoken to the tutor.
9 - What you need to bring to the first class
1. A4 folder.

You may be able to progress to a Maths GCSE, your tutor will discuss this with you at the end of the course.
Paperwork to help your learning
At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals.
All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency, who expect that learners who enrol on a course leading to a qualification will take that qualification at the College.
All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
