Course description

Learn what the dangers are and how to protect yourself and others including children when online.

Use of a keyboard and mouse.

What you will learn

With the increased use of technology and the internet it is important to know how to stay safe. This course will provide useful information on how to safeguard individuals. This course will cover use of social networking, protecting a device from possible viruses, backing up a device and how to shop safely online.

How you will learn on this course

Explanations and demonstrations from the tutor. Information sheets. Tasks. One-to-one tuition where necessary.

How you will be assessed on this course

1. Identify the different social networking sites. 2. Recognise the importance of safe and appropriate use of social networking sites. 3. Know how to communicate appropriately online. 4. Identify the term “Phishing” and know how to prevent and delete unwanted emails. 5. Recognise the importance of suitable usernames and passwords. 6. Know how to install anti virus on a device and update software. 7. Identify how to back up devices. 8. Recognise how to shop safely online.

None, but learners will find additional study at home or at the Open Study Centre at Brampton Road helpful.

Additional information

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
