Course descriptionParents of children with special educational needs often feel isolated and frustrated that ‘standard parenting advice’ sometimes doesn’t work. This 10 week course provides an opportunity for parents/carer/grandparents to support and encourage each other, helping you share feelings and experiences, and come up with solutions to problems on the basis of what works – not what’s meant to work! The sessions are written by parents and professionals with input from many different families with experience of children with special needs. They aim to help support you in meeting your child’s needs, focussing on children aged between 3 to 11 years with a disability or special needs, particularly those who have learning, developmental and behavioural issues.

What you will learnWe start by looking at what life is really like living with your child who has special needs, helping them reach their potential and how to keep going. We consider how to boost self esteem through play and learning, respond with good listening and how our parenting style affects our children’s responses.
Next we explore how you can talk to your child about their condition, other people’s reactions to your child and recognising and coping with feelings.
Why do our children act the way they do? We look at the many reasons behind behaviour, the vital subject of setting boundaries, why children need them and why they can be hard to set. Following on from this is the value of routines, praise, and consistency and exploring a toolkit of discipline strategies.
Home and school are often big issues and we look at how the school might support your child’s learning, how you can play a part in this and where to look for further support. We include specific sessions looking at children with ASD and ADHD.
Finally, there’s a chance to recognise the impact on the wider family and to review what the course has meant to you.
How you will learn on this courseThis course is led by two qualified parenting facilitators who are tutors within the college in an informal and non- threatening environment. There will be tutor input, role play, discussion in pairs, small groups and as a whole group, as well as time for individual reflection. The use of power point and clips from you tube and DVDs. A Student Learning Record is provided for goal setting and reflection.

9. Explain ways in which we can handle other people's comments.
10. Identify realistic expectations for behaviour.
11. Identify truths and myths concerning ADHD.
12. Start to identify how ADHD is affecting their own child.
13. Discuss ways of managing Attention Deficit behaviours and impulsive behaviours.
14. Discuss ways of managing Attention Deficit behaviours and impulsive behaviours.
15. Identify options for treatment including medication.
16. Explain what is meant by ASD.
17. Identify their child's sensory difficulties.
18. Explain the link between anxiety and challenging behaviour.
19. Identify ways of managing anxiety.
20. Recognise the parental rights and responsibilities contained in the SEND code of practice.
21. Discuss the SEN provision.
22. Practise skills for more effective communication with professionals.
23. Discuss the impact of their SN child on other family members.
24. Identify some helping strategies for each situation.

Additional informationAt the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and agree your personal learning goals.
All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency.
All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and ILP.
