Canterbury Christchurch University Foundation Degree Childhood Studies

WORK-BASED COURSE: EARN WHILE YOU LEARN
 
This innovative work-based course offers students the opportunity to gain a qualification while continuing to work.
 
This course provides an opportunity for those who are working with children, or who wish to work in child-related areas, to undertake further study in order to complete the requirements for the award of Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies. It is applicable for those with a variety of backgrounds; teaching assistants, unqualified teachers, those engaged with a variety of child and youth related settings, those working with young offenders and those working in areas related to other teaching and learning environments.
 
It is a requirement of the course that you have a minimum of six months experience of working with children or young people (this can be cumulative) and are working in a child/youth related setting in a paid or voluntary basis for at least 15 hours per week.
 
Students will explore the relationship between theories of child development and practical application in the workplace where you will gain a valuable understanding of how children and young people learn.


On successful completion of the course you may choose to continue to develop your knowledge and understanding of childhood studies by progressing to the BA (Hons) Childhood Studies, a one-year top-up degree.

NCFE Award in Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children's and Young People's Settings Level 1

This qualification will develop the knowledge and awareness of the types of provision in the Health, Social Care and Children’s and Young People’s sectors. They include the roles played by workers, from principles and values through to health and safety and working with others.

This qualification:
  • is aimed at learners who wish to develop an understanding of these settings before deciding whether working in the sector is for them
  • allows learners to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required for employment and/or career progression in the sectors
  • allows learners to tailor their learning to their interests through the provision of a broad range of optional units

Canterbury Christchurch University ​BA Childhood Studies (Top Up)

For those who have completed a relevant foundation degree – such as our Childhood Studies course – the BA Childhood Studies top-up is the key to the next stage of your career, or the next phase of study.
Upon successful completion, you will have gained a degree which opens all kinds of doors and career paths.

A BA Childhood Studies is also the foundation upon which you can build your route to qualified teacher status by taking a relevant postgraduate course, such as a PGCE. 
This course is delivered one evening per week at LECB, and can be completed around your current employment, over the course of a year. 
This exciting area of study explores the influences that shape children’s development and learning, their personalities, and the critical periods that will shape their journeys to adulthood.
This course is ideal for you if you have already completed the Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies and are working with children and young people aged 0-19 years in settings such as schools, nurseries, childcare, foster care, child minders, youth groups, cadets, or library services.

Entry requirements
You are required to hold 240 credits of advanced standing (usually a foundation degree or similar; for example, a diploma of higher education or other accumulated credits at Levels 4 and 5) in a related area.
GCSE English grade C (or equivalent) is also a requirement. If you do not have English at GCSE grade C or above, you will be required to take and pass the University equivalency tests for entry onto this course.

Additional entry requirements
You must be in a work-based role (paid or voluntary), spending at least 15 hours per week in a child or young people's setting.

Entry is subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (completed by the employer).

NCFE CACHE Level 1 Certificate in Caring for Children

This qualification is for learners who want to develop the basic skills needed to care for a baby or young child (from birth to 5 years 11 months). It is aimed at a range of students, including young people needing to develop life skills as well as those who are thinking of working in childcare. It is also suitable for parents who wish to develop parenting skills, and students who may feel they need a little extra support, or where English is an additional language.

NCFE CACHE Level 2 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner

The aim of this qualification is to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding of babies and young children from birth to 7 years of age with applied knowledge in the early years, 0-5 years. The content meets the Department for Education’s Level 2 full and relevant criteria for a L2 Early Yeasts Practitioner in the workforce. In addition, this course will provide a foundation for those who wish to progress to level 3 (subject to entry requirements). We recommend learners complete 250 placement hours whilst undertaking this qualification. You will need to agree a placement in a suitable setting that delivers Early Years education according to the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS). ​

NCFE Award in Caring for a Child/Children Entry 3

This qualification is designed to stimulate interest and encourage a learner’s understanding of the skills needed to care for a baby or young child. It is aimed at young people or adults needing to develop life skills. It is also suitable for parents who wish to develop parenting skills and life skills. This qualification is a good way to enable learners to make an introduction to the health and care or early year’s sector.
