Family Learning Skills

Friendly Family Learning classes take place in partnership with schools, nurseries, children’s and community centres, libraries and our sites across Bexley. Family Learning is: a stepping stone into further learning and a  way to help parents and carers support their children at home, in school and in life 

Keep up with the Child in maths, English and SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar). These FREE courses will show you how children learn at school and how best to support them. The aim is to improve:  English, maths, language and IT skills of adults with an opportunity to gain a qualification. These courses are funded by the Education & Skills Funding Agency and priority will be given to adults who do not have any formal qualifications. Cakes and Sweet Treats

Max. 1 child (7+) per adult. Prepare a variety of dishes, taste and evaluate them, recognise how to work safely in the kitchen and use a range of culinary skills. This is a course designed for parents, carers and grandparents with a child aged 7+ to learn on a 1 – 1 basis. It covers how to prepare a variety of desserts, cakes and biscuits. It will also cover some basic cake decorating skills. Some weeks, each family will cook something different and then the prepared dishes will be shared and eaten as a group at the end of the session and some weeks you will work as a family to decorate your own cakes. PLEASE NOTE: The adult whose enrolment details we have MUST be the adult who attends with the child(ren) each and every session of the course.

Christmas Cupcakes and Cookies

They will be asked to complete a Student Learning Record (SLR) which will help learners to reflect and monitor their progress. This 10 week course provides an opportunity for parents/carer/grandparents to support and encourage each other, helping you share feelings and experiences, and come up with solutions to problems on the basis of what works – not what’s meant to work! The sessions are written by parents and professionals with input from many different families with experience of children with special needs. They aim to help support you in meeting your child’s needs, focussing on children aged between 3 to 11 years with a disability or special needs, particularly those who have learning, developmental and behavioural issues.

Treats for Your Dog

Make tried and tested biscuits and muffins for your pooch. We will make flaxseed and peanut crunches, beef bites, turkey and cheese muffins and dog butterfly muffins. All the recipes are quick and easy to make and the size of the biscuits can be adapted to suit your dog. They will be asked to complete an Individual Learning Journey (ILJ) which will help learners to reflect and monitor their progress. Keeping Up With the Children in English/maths/SPaG

These sessions are for parents/carers of children of middle primary age (years 2-4). The emphasis is on modern teaching methods, curriculum content and explaining unfamiliar language. 

Skills Check Maths

Extend your Maths skills enabling you to better support your child. You will work towards achieving a recognised qualification and have the opportunity to progress to a higher level.

 

Wider Family Learning

These courses are a great opportunity for the whole family to learn together; the aim is to improve:

  • Skills and knowledge of both adult and child and to offer progression opportunities
  • Confidence and self-esteem of both adult and child.
  • Positive attitudes towards learning, education and behaviour

Please note: registration fee payable per adult for these courses. Please attend all sessions for which your family is enrolled

Adults may initially enrol on TWO courses in any academic year. However, we will keep your name on a waiting list for further courses and contact you if space is available
